Assignment 2-1: My GIMP Photo

Photo-editing
The below photograph was taken last Christmas vacation (I'm Jewish but it sadly did not fall on my Holiday so I might as well call it like it was). I have edited it in a number of ways. First I put it in black and white. Then I used the smudging tool on the background to fade it and make myself pop. Then I added some white lines with the pen and pencil tools on the middle left hand side to increase the blur of the fade and remove a tree branch that didn't look right in black and white. I then added a ton of white to the bottom left hand corner with the pencil and paintbrush and smudged the boundary. This provided an otherworldly glow and made the whole piece seem more ethereal, which was what I was trying to do with my edits. I'm familiar with  GIMP from the past but more of my experience is with Photoshop, I found the differences interesting. I'm much less fond of the brush control and customization in GIMP as one example.
